This webpage contains online resources for students of English language and linguistics, together with information about my research and publications.

University of Sunderland students have full online access to the following journals:

Discourse and Society; Journal of Sociolinguistics; Journal of English Linguistics; Language in Society; Corpora; Language and Communication; Language and Literature; Media, Culture and Society; Children's Literature in Education; Journal of Pragmatics; Linguistics and Education; Journal of Phonetics; Lingua; Language Sciences; Linguistics; Speech Communication; Journal of Communication Disorders; Language Learning Journal; Language Teaching Research; Applied Linguistics; English for Specific Purposes; Journal of Second Language Writing; Journal of English for Academic Purposes; Assessing Writing; System; ELT Journal; Literacy.

To access these titles go to this page and click on 'Find journal articles' on the right, then click on the 'Find e-Journal' tab and search. At some point you will be asked to log in using your university ID and password or, depending on the journal, you might need to log in with your Athens ID.

Dozens of full-text literature journals can be accessed through Literary Reference Center Plus (log on via Athens), together with these language journals: Australian Journal of Linguistics; Linguistics; European Journal of English Studies; International Journal of English Studies; Journal of Literary Semantics; Computers and the Humanities; Philological Quarterly; Women & Language; English Studies; RELC Journal; Review of English Studies; World Englishes; Metaphor and Symbol; Notes & Queries; Modern Language Review; Literary & Linguistic Computing.

The JSTOR archive also has key back issues of relevant journals (check out the sections on Language & Literature and Linguistics).

The Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) gives free access to hundreds of online journals.

Resources associated with the modules I teach can be found at SunSpace (Sunderland students only).

Some useful study skills advice can be had on the University of Sunderland library’s Specialist Support pages. To help develop the critical thinking required for internet research, take a look at Internet Detective (or Internet for English). And the Research Observatory is helpful too. Sunderland University’s Learning Development Services provides study support for students.

And what about when you graduate? You might find 'After English' helpful.

My main areas of research are in sociolinguistics, corpus linguistics, and discourse analysis. My publications include:
